CBL LAUNCHES “CLEAN NOTE CAMPAIGN” TO PROTECT LIBERIAN DOLLAR AND PROMOTE NATIONAL PRIDE

Monrovia, Liberia –The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has launched a bold nationwide initiative to safeguard the Liberian dollar through its new “Clean Note Campaign: Our Money, Our Pride.” The campaign officially kicks off on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Rally Time Market in Monrovia and is designed to address the widespread mishandling of Liberian currency.

The move comes in response to the alarming rate of currency mutilation across the country, which has resulted in an estimated L$1 billion worth of the new family of banknotes printed in 2022 being damaged. Poor handling practices such as squeezing, writing, stapling, and exposing notes to dirt and moisture — along with melting coins — have placed significant financial strain on the government due to costly replacement needs.

CBL Executive Governor Henry F. Saamoi stressed the campaign’s deeper meaning, stating, “The Liberian dollar is a symbol of our sovereignty. When we disrespect our money, we disrespect ourselves as a people.” Saamoi emphasized that the campaign is not just about protecting currency, but also about strengthening national identity and restoring public confidence in the economy.

Ahead of the launch, campaign teams will stage a two-day float across Monrovia, engaging the public through music, drama, and direct interaction. The campaign carries a strong warning for those who continue to damage banknotes: offenders face a fine of L$500,000 or a two-year prison sentence.

The Clean Note Campaign has gained significant backing from national stakeholders, including all nine commercial banks, the Liberian Marketing Association, the Liberia Business Association, the National Association of Foreign Exchange Bureaus, and key groups representing street vendors, scratch card dealers, and motorcyclists. These partners have pledged to mobilize their members and help spread the campaign’s message across Liberia.

CBL says this initiative is not a one-time event but part of a long-term push involving radio programs, community theater, grassroots outreach, and direct market engagements. The goal is to ensure every Liberian — from vendors and taxi drivers to students and office workers — understands the importance of proper currency handling.

By promoting the message “Our Money, Our Pride – Handle It with Care,” the Central Bank aims to save millions in replacement costs and encourage citizens to show pride in their national currency.
